The South Spartanburg Fire District is a consolidation of the Arkwright, Croft and Roebuck Fire Districts, organized in January of 2022. The combination (career and volunteer) fire district provides an all-hazards emergency service to approximately 42.9 square miles in its primary response area, in addition to working with automatic aid partners thereby increasing the coverage area to approximately 300 square miles.
Included in the primary response area are nine petroleum bulk storage tank facilities, eight miles of petroleum pipelines, 4.2 miles of a natural gas pipeline, six chemical processing facilities, seven miles of Interstate Twenty-Six, six major highways totaling 59.8 miles, 21.4 miles of railroad tracks, 10.93 square miles of the Croft State Park, and six educational facilities.
Among the educational facilities are one elementary school, two middle schools, one high school ninth grade freshman campus, one mega high school (grades ten-twelve), and the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind. These entities combined with other commercial establishments within the fire district total over five hundred business occupancies. Within the primary response area the population served is approximately 20,000 citizens, this number increases when the automatic aid response areas are included. The primary response area of the community is a combination of suburban and rural, while the automatic aid responses range from city urban areas to the other end of the spectrum in rural areas. The South Spartanburg Fire District regularly responds to over 1,900 emergency and service calls annually.”
